Amperio is a male Spider Monkey approximately 13 years old. On the 20th of September 2019 he was found in a hotel in Playa del Carmen by Ecology Environment Playa del Carmen and transferred through the help of PROFEPA to the Primate Pets.
Upon his arrival at the Sanctuary, Amperio had burns on various parts of his body. The wounds that he presented had already started scarring, as the incident happened approximately 10 days before he arrived to our veterinary clinic.
He was most likely the victim of several electric shocks, and he suffered severe third-degree burns. As a result of this incident, he lost a leg and an arm.
Amperio spent several months in a low-rise shelter and received several specialized therapies in order to improve his health.
On the 16th of January 2020, a larger shelter was fitted out so that Amperio could live with a community of 13 other Spider Monkeys. In spite of his physical limitations, Amperio is now the leader of this troop of monkeys, and he is respected by the rest of the members.
