Kevin is a Howler Monkey of approximately 3 years old. He arrived at Primate Pets on February 9, 2019 through the PROFEPA (The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection).

When he arrived at the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, Kevin had liver problems. The most probable causes of this disease on monkeys are over medication, a bad diet or a genetic problem. At his arrival, he was also diagnosed by the Sanctuary’s veterinaries with a deformation in his eyes and with affected nerves (he makes involuntary gestures and movements).

Since he was rescued in this state by the PROFEPA, we do not know much about his background history. However, he was most likely the victim of an attack by other animals that left him in this state.

In addition to the conditions mentioned above, Kevin is suspected of having dwarfism, a condition that does not allow him to grow at the same rate as a normal howler monkey. Veterinarians currently continue to do studies to confirm his physical condition.

At the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, Kevin receives a proper diet and with thorough and specialized care, his illness is under control. However, constant observation by veterinarians and our Animal Welfare Team has to continue to keep him in a stable health and to prevent to our best abilities that he doesn’t worsen.

However, constant observation by veterinarians and the animal welfare team continues.

Most of the Howler Monkeys that currently live in the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary are a lot older and have been here for a long time. The Animal Welfare Team has introduced Kevin to a special program with other monkeys his age and species to improve his socialization skills.

Kevin is a charismatic and playful howler monkey and currently lives happily at Primate Pets.
