Kimi is a female White-Faced Capuchin Monkey of about 2 years old, originally from South America. Kimi was a victim of wildlife trafficking; she was found inside a cardboard box in the trunk of a bus in the Campeche region, in Mexico.

Through the help of PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), she arrived at the Akumal Monkey and Rescued Animal Sanctuary on February of 2021. Upon arriving at the Sanctuary, Kimi showed physical weakness due to improper feeding and a lack of natural habitat. She also had a tail injury due to self-mutilation, a problem is result due to the stress and anxiety she experienced before arriving at Primate Pets.

Our Animal Welfare Team began a long process to start her rehabilitation. They worked on a specialized therapy to stop Kimi from biting her tail, as well as a nutrition program to improve her physical condition.

Kimi was not alone in her suffering from illegal trafficking; she arrived with two other White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys that also needed to go through a rehabilitation process. Unfortunately, one of the mokeys was not able to handle the stress. She was in a critical health upon her arrival, and a few days after she came to the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary she unfortunately passed away.

Kimi is currently in a stable condition, and she lives with one of the Capuchin Monkeys with whom she came to the Sanctuary. The Animal Welfare Team works daily on an enrichment program to improve the living conditions she went through during the wildlife trafficking.
