On the 29th of April 2021, a baby Howler Monkey with the name of Muuk arrived at Primate Pets. Muuk was found at the biosphere of Calakmul in the state of Campeche, Mexico. People from the local community found the baby monkey in the jungle lying on the floor next to its dead mother.
She was in a very bad condition, Muuk had a fractured arm with bone exposure. We do not know the cause of death of its’ mother, but we believe she died because she was hunted for her baby. Every year, many mother monkeys die when hunters shoot them while they carry their babies on the top of the trees. The baby monkeys often have several internal injuries due the high falls, and they are later trafficked and sold for a lor of money on black markets.
Thanks to the help of PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), Muuk was able to come to the Primate Pets. When she arrived at the Sanctuary, she suffered from the exposed fracture, as well as infections from her exposed injuries. Muuk rapidly went through several medical examinations and operations to save her broken arm; and she is currently in recovery process. Thanks to the help of many people who donated to cover her medical costs, we were able to save her Arm.
“Muuk” means power in Mayan language. She was given that name because we hope Muuk finds the power to become healthy soon and continue her life without her beloved monkey family. At the Primate Pets, our Animal Welfare Team will do anything they can to give her all the love and care she needs.
